Big Dewey Reviews Jazz DVDs

Every once in a while I receive detailed music reviews from a music afficionado who shall be known here as Big Dewey. With his permission I'm reposting his capsule reviews of a few jazz DVDs:

Roland Kirk Live at the Montreux Jazz Festival 1972

Roland Kirk Montreux 1972

This is an absolutely stunning video and features
great songs like Volunteered Slavery and Serenade to a
Cuckoo. I also would extremely very highly recommend a
Roland Kirk cd out called I Talk to the Spirits where
the entire album Kirk only plays the flute. Whether
it's wild playing along with his nose flute, or very
musical swinging flute with Roland singing into the
flute while playing it, or incredibly stunningly
beatiful flute, Kirk always sounds unique.

Miles Davis Live 1967 and 1969

Features the classic quintet with Tony Williams, Shorter, Hancock, and
Carter doing many classics. The later video has Chick
Corea, Jack Dejonnette, and others.

Art Blakey, Lee Morgan, and John Gilmore live in 1961

Just seeing close ups of Morgan and Blakey make this
incredible to watch. This same dvd also has Sun Ra live
in 1976. (John Gilmore was a tenor sax player for the Sun Ra Archestra.)

Ornette Coleman Sound/Roland Kirk with John Cage

These are two 20-25 minute art films put on one dvd.
The first is a great film on Ornette Coleman with some
of his quartet playing. The Kirk one is great, an art
film where he plays alongside Cage's avant garde
electronic music.
